Sensei Bruce Elkind started Karate in 1968 when he was 11 years old with Sensei Mike Gonzales. Receiving his Black belt in 1985 he later received his second degree with Kanazawa Sensei, then retested again with the I.s.k.f. and joined the competition team taught by the legendary Frank smith. The next three years he trained intensively with the team and competed across the country where he consistently placed in the top 3 spots and was a good competitor. Sensei Elkind placed equal importance to Kata competition.
After the team retired, Sensei Elkind continued his training in the South bay dojo with Sensei Gonzales. After Sensei Mike Gonzales¡Çs passing in Dec 2004 he felt a need to take over where Sensei left, where he follows in the tradition of teaching Shotokan Karate.
Though his first love is Shotokan karate, he has trained in many other styles, i.e Tae kwon do, hapkido, and kenpo. The last five years he has trained in brazillian jiu jitsu, and
boxing. This gives Sensei Elkind a deeper understanding of martial arts in general, but Shotokan in particular. |
